Anticipatory service
Anticipatory service means the hotel reads your needs before you mention them. Walking through the lobby on a rainy day, an umbrella appears at the door before you reach for one. You mention to the bellhop you have a headache, ibuprofen arrives at your room ten minutes later. The famous Ritz-Carlton policy gives every staff member a $2,000 daily authority to solve guest problems without manager approval. The cost of this service is built into the room rate, so no extra tip is expected for individual gestures, though if a specific staff member goes out of their way, $20-50 USD at checkout, slipped into an envelope with their name, is appreciated.
