Arabesque

An ornamental motif built from stylised vegetal interlace, scrolling foliage and sinuous stems that unfold in continuous rhythms suggesting infinity. Characteristic of Islamic art, the arabesque dresses stucco, wood, ceramic and metal, frequently complementing geometric patterns and calligraphy. In Eastern heritage palaces it covers ceilings, panels and friezes with a controlled, codified profusion of ornament that conveys craftsmanship and historical depth to discerning guests.
