Aspect and slope

Aspect refers to a plot's orientation relative to the sun, while slope describes the incline on which it lies. In the northern hemisphere, a south or south-east aspect maximises sunlight and heat received, encouraging ripening, as on the hillsides of the Cote de Nuits. The gradient improves drainage and the drainage of cold air downhill, reducing the risk of frost damage and fungal disease pressure.
