Banya

A banya is a traditional Russian steam bath, hot (60-90°C), with periodic water poured on heated stones to release intense bursts of steam. The signature ritual involves being gently slapped with bundles of leafy birch, oak, or eucalyptus branches (veniks) by a bathing attendant, this stimulates circulation and releases essential oils. The full banya experience lasts 2-3 hours, alternating between heat, venik beating, cold plunge or icy water bucket, rest, and herbal tea. At luxury Moscow hotels or Siberian wellness retreats, you can book a private banya with attendants for 200-500 EUR. What to bring: swimwear (in mixed-gender or hotel settings), a felt hat to protect your head from heat, a towel. Avoid alcohol before (vodka traditionally comes after). Skip if you have cardiovascular issues.
