Cantilever pool

A cantilever pool refers to a basin suspended in overhang above empty space, structurally borne by a concrete slab anchored in the building, with no visible city-side support. The American urban version is associated with the Joule Hotel in Dallas, whose eighth-floor pool extends 2.5 metres beyond Main Street pavement and offers swimmers a partly glass floor. The structural challenge demands an overload calculation on bearing walls and a build cost three to four times higher than a conventional embedded pool. A lesser-known feature : the Joule's cantilever pool acts as an image asset, mobilised by luxury travel advisors when prescribing Dallas, and contributes only marginally to occupancy, the hotel remaining mostly business in mix.
