Dispersion

Splitting of white light into its spectral colours as it passes through a gem, the source of the fire perceived in a well-cut diamond. The higher a stone's dispersion index, the more vivid its coloured flashes. Diamond has a notable dispersion, though certain stones such as sphene exceed it. Cutting optimises this phenomenon, a key selling point in palace jewellery windows.
