Gold karat

Measure of the purity of a gold alloy, distinct from the carat used for gem weight. Pure gold corresponds to twenty-four karats; an eighteen-karat title means seventy-five percent gold, the remainder being other metals that give strength and colour. A hallmark guarantees the title. Palace houses work mostly in eighteen-karat gold, yellow, white or rose, for their settings and mounts.
