Grainy tannins

Grainy tannins describe a tannic texture perceived as rough or sandy, leaving an impression of fine particles across the tongue and gums. This sensation often reflects incomplete phenolic ripeness, forceful extraction or still-youthful ageing. Set against silky tannins, they may soften with time in bottle when the underlying material allows, yet can stay angular in already evolved wines, signalling a hardened rather than integrated tannic frame.
