Grand Staircase Escalante

Grand Staircase Escalante refers to the 7,600 square kilometre national monument located in southern Utah, designated in 1996 by presidential proclamation under Bill Clinton, which unfolds a succession of geological plateaus stacked over 1,500 metres of elevation. The sector borders the Glen Canyon Recreation Area and hosts Amangiri, the signature Aman hotel opened in 2009 on 240 hectares of private land in the heart of the rock formations (Aman official, 2026). Amangiri integrates 34 suites and the Camp Sarika glamping site, whose ten pavilions offer direct mesa views. A lesser-known feature : the site's characteristic orange rock, known as Navajo Sandstone, derives from Jurassic aeolian dunes stabilised 180 million years ago, making it one of the most narrative geological landscapes in the United States.
