Inclusion

Internal characteristic of a gem formed during crystallisation: a foreign crystal, fracture, cavity or cloud. Inclusions are used to establish the clarity grade and form a unique signature that can identify a particular stone. An inclusion reaching the surface is called a feather or cavity. In diamonds, their size and visibility under tenfold magnification fix the position on the clarity scale.
