Johannes Baur

Johannes Baur (1795-1865), an Austrian-born hotelier settled in Zurich, first opened the Baur en Ville on the Paradeplatz in 1838. In 1844 he founded the Baur au Lac on the shores of Lake Zurich, choosing the site for its view of the Alps. Passed to his son Theodor, the hotel is still run by the founding family in its seventh generation.
