J. Willard Marriott

John Willard Marriott (1900-1985) launched a root beer stand in Washington in 1927 that grew into a restaurant chain, then opened his first motel in 1957. From this family business emerged Marriott International, today the world's largest hotel group. His son Bill Marriott continued an American dynasty that began at a modest drinks counter and spread across the globe.
