Lumbung

Lumbung are the small, almost cute-looking rice barns you see lifted on stilts across Bali, with their steep curved roof that looks like a saddle. Originally built to keep rice dry and rats out, they've been adopted by Balinese luxury hotels as villa typologies. At Bambu Indah you can actually sleep in a 100-year-old antique lumbung that's been relocated and restored. Four Seasons Sayan and Capella Ubud both nod to the shape in their own villa designs. They're small inside, usually one room plus a ladder up to a sleeping loft, so they trade space for character. Big personality, tiny footprint.
