Mohs scale

Scale of relative mineral hardness established in 1812 by German mineralogist Friedrich Mohs, graded from one (talc) to ten (diamond). It ranks materials by their ability to scratch one another. Ruby and sapphire, both varieties of corundum, reach nine. This figure guides jewellers in choosing settings and in advising on the care of stones displayed in palace boutiques, where durability matters.
