Napkin etiquette

Napkin etiquette refers to the conventions governing how a guest handles the table linen. It is placed folded on the lap, crease toward the diner, at the start of the meal. Left on the chair, it signals a temporary absence; folded to the left of the plate, the end of the meal. In palace dining rooms the server unfolds it for the guest and brings a fresh one upon their return to the table.
