Opera seria
A noble and serious genre of Italian opera that dominated Europe from the 1710s until around 1770. Opera seria treats historical or mythological subjects, with princely heroes and a structure of virtuoso arias interspersed with recitatives. It addressed the courts and celebrated aristocratic virtues. This Baroque repertoire appears in the lyric seasons proposed to palace guests with a taste for early opera, often in historically informed productions.
