A palacete is a small urban palace from Spain or Portugal, somewhere between a Parisian townhouse and an Italian palazzo. Most were built between 1750 and 1900 by aristocrats and merchants in cities like Madrid, Lisbon, Barcelona and Seville. They have ornate stone facades, grand staircases, sometimes interior courtyards, and serious craftsmanship (carved ceilings, marquetry floors). When converted to hotels, they sit in the sweet spot: too small to feel like a chain, too grand to feel like a guesthouse.
