A patio is the open-air interior courtyard at the heart of Mediterranean and Latin American houses, typically with a central fountain, citrus trees, jasmine, and walls covered in azulejos or stucco. It's the climate trick that makes hot-country architecture work: cool air pools in the shaded courtyard during the day, and the whole house breathes around it.
