Reid's Palace (Madeira)

Reid's Palace is a Madeira palace hotel overlooking Funchal Bay, whose construction began in 1887 under architect George Somers Clarke. The project bore the name of William Reid, a Scot who reached the island in 1836 and made his fortune in the Madeira wine trade before dying ahead of completion. His sons Willy and Alfred saw the work through, and the hotel opened in November 1891.
