Riwaq

An arcade or colonnaded portico, open on at least one side, that lines the interior courtyard of mosques and Islamic dwellings. The riwaq provides a shaded transition between the open sahn and the enclosed rooms, sheltering the movement of occupants. In palaces converted into hotels, these arcades frame patios and create resting spaces protected from the sun, a recurring feature of heritage Eastern hospitality.
