Sauce boat

A sauce boat is a low, elongated vessel fitted with a pouring lip and a handle, used to present and serve a sauce at table. It often sits on a matching tray or attached saucer that catches drips and comes with a small ladle. In palace silverware it accompanies the main course so that each guest may help themselves, the sauce being spooned before them at the gueridon during the most attentive styles of service in the dining room.
