Selamlik

The public part of an Ottoman dwelling, reserved for receiving male visitors and conducting business, as opposed to the private harem. The selamlik contained ceremonial salons, offices and guest rooms, often richly decorated. This spatial division reflected Ottoman social norms. In yalis and konaks converted into hotels, the former selamlik frequently houses the communal and reception spaces, its grander rooms lending themselves to lobbies and lounges.
