Temazcal

A temazcal is a traditional Mesoamerican sweat lodge ceremony, originally practiced by the Aztec and Maya. The structure is a small, low dome made of stone or adobe, where heated volcanic rocks are placed in a central pit and infused with sacred herbs (copal, white sage, rosemary, eucalyptus). A trained ceremony leader (temazcalero) guides participants through four "doors" or cycles, each focused on a spiritual intention. The experience lasts 2-3 hours in complete darkness at 60-80°C. What to expect at premium hotels in Mexico (Belmond, Esperanza, Solaz): wear a swimsuit, bring a towel and water bottle, and avoid heavy meals beforehand. Cost: typically 80-200 EUR per person. Not recommended if you have claustrophobia, cardiovascular conditions, or are pregnant. Powerful and emotionally cathartic for most participants.
