Tessitura

The range of notes in which a voice or a role most comfortably and most frequently lies, distinct from the total compass. Tessitura characterises the demands of a role and guides casting according to voice type. A role of high tessitura sustains the upper register at length. This technical notion illuminates the choice of performers in the operas proposed to palace guests, explaining why certain singers suit certain parts.
