Tipping etiquette

Tipping rules vary enormously by country, and this is the #1 source of stress for international travelers. United States: 18-22% in restaurants, $1-2 per bag, $3-5 per night for housekeeping (left daily, not at checkout), $5-10 for the doorman who hails your taxi. United Kingdom and most of Europe: 10-12.5% in restaurants (often added automatically as "service"), €1-2 per bag. France: "service compris" means service is legally included since 1987, extra tipping is appreciated but never mandatory (5-10% for great service). Japan: do not tip, ever, it's actively refused and can offend. Middle East and Caribbean resorts: 10-20% added to bills automatically, plus extra for outstanding service.
