Varietal expression

Varietal expression describes the way the aromatic and gustatory traits specific to a grape variety reveal themselves in the finished wine. A Sauvignon Blanc marked by box tree and citrus notes, or a Gewurztraminer with lychee and rose accents, illustrates strong varietal expression. Its intensity varies with terroir, the vintage climate, ripeness at harvest and winemaking choices such as extraction, yeast and oak use.
