Wine sediment
Wine sediment is the solid residue that forms at the bottom of a bottle during ageing. It consists of tannins and colouring matter that have precipitated in reds, or of tartrate crystals in whites. Its presence signals an old, unfiltered wine rather than a fault. It justifies standing the bottle upright before service, then decanting it to separate the clear wine from the deposit left behind.
