Yali

An Ottoman waterside mansion or summer residence, built almost exclusively along the banks of the Bosphorus in Istanbul. The yali takes account of its coastal setting, with large bay windows, carved wooden overhangs and wide eaves. Constructed during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries for the elite, including viziers and pashas, these riverside palaces are today occasionally reconverted into prestige hotels, offering rare frontage on the strait.
